Badminton intro

Badminton falls under the classification of racquet sport. Two players opposing each other or two pairs of people opposing each other can play the game. In the latter case, the players are positioned on the halves of the court that is rectangular and a net divides the court.

A shuttlecock is struck with the racquets and it is made to fly over the net and fall into the court of the opponent. The sides are allowed to strike the cock only once before it is passed over. When the cock falls on the floor, the rally is ended. The shuttlecock flies in different direction when it is hit by the racquet because of its unique shape and properties if aerodynamics. Since the shuttlecock is mostly made of feather, the cock experiences a rapid deceleration as compared to a ball.

Badminton, when played on a professional and competitive level, is played as an indoor sport. This because the wind outside may affect the flight of the shuttlecock. However, many people play badminton for recreation and casual sport outside. The game of badminton is played in the Olympics and has five events. These events are singles for men and women, doubles for men and women and then there are the mixed doubles where a woman and a man plays against another woman and a man.

The entire width of a badminton court is about 20 feet. However, when singles are played the width is about 17 feet. The entire length of a badminton court is about 44 feet. In its edges, the height of the net is about 5.1 feet while at the center, height is 5 feet. There are no specifications regarding the height of the ceiling but it goes without saying that the height should enough for a player to make a lofty serve.
